Verse-O-Matic Updates

By Chad Butler Leave a Comment

Well, I had Verse-O-Matic running pretty well with the 3.1.0 release.  There have been quite a few downloads and I have seen it popping up on sites around the blogosphere. Thanks for support! It’s nice to see the work getting used out there.

Now, I have somewhat neglected VOM for a few months for a number of reasons… I’ve moved, both physically (new house) and virtually (new domain); I’ve been preparing for a summer missions trip; and I’ve been putting a tremendous amount of work into the WP-Members plugin.  WP-Members finally seems to be stable enough to leave alone for now so I’ve moved on to working on some more plugins, some of which will become modules for WP-Members.

But back to Verse-O-Matic…

I’ve made some updates.  Not major enough to jump a full version, but we are now at 3.3.0 as a beta release. The key updates are:

  1. Verse-O-Matic now works as a widget with widget-enabled themes.
  2. I’ve combined the admin file and the plugin file so it is now all self-contained in one file.
  3. Lastly, I’ve set up a demo site for the Verse-O-Matic at http://butlerblog.com/vom-demo/

I’ve got so much in the hopper lately with plugin development that each plugin will ultimately end up with their own full site and that will likely become the repository for all things related to that plugin, rather than mixing it up with the general blog.  That should make the blog better for content readers, and the plugin users will be happy with their own area.

That’s all for now.  The VOM 3.3.0b beta preview is downloadable here.  It’s pretty stable so feel free to use it. Upgrades from 3.0.0 (ONLY!) still need the upgrade script. Everyone else, just overwrite verse-o-matic.php with the new file and you should be good to go (vom-admin.php can be deleted, but doesn’t have to be).

Updates

Well, it is good to be finally getting everything moved over to the new site. It is a long process. The blog has developed some good search engine traffic that I do not want to lose, so I am using Angsuman’s Permanent Redirect plugin to set up permanent redirects for each post from the old domain. In order to speed things up, rather than use the WordPress admin to set the redirects, I am adding these to the postmeta table in the database directly via Navicat.

Also, I have email newsletter plugin in development. I know there are already email plugins for WordPress, so who needs another one, right? Well, once again, there are a number of plugins that have some features I am looking for, but not ALL the features I’m looking for. Also, this plugin will need to integrate with the WP-Members plugin, so I am starting from scratch. Once it is stable, I’ll release it as a stand-alone. Then I’ll work on integrating into the WP-Members 2.0 release.

Not to leave the Verse-O-Matic out in the cold, I’ll be working on some upgrades there as well.

Thanks for the support!

WP-Members Plugin version 1.6

By Chad Butler Leave a Comment

Well, there was an issue with the previous releases that I didn’t catch until now because my sites run buffered output in php.  So, for sites not buffering output, all headers (including cookies) must be done before the get_header() function in the theme. I made an adjustment to the plugin to accommodate this and it is included in release 1.6.

Get it here.
