The FairTax in 2008

Posted on May 16, 2007 | Filed Under Editorial

The FairTax plan could get some air time during the 2008 Presidential Primaries.  There are currently two (that I know of) candidates that publicly support the implementation of H.R. 25 - one from each major party:

Here are some quotes:

“That is the first thing I would love to do as president, put a ‘Going Out of Business’ sign on the Internal Revenue Service and stop the $10 billion a year that it costs just for them to operate. If we had a fair tax, it would eliminate not just the alternative minimum tax _ personal income tax, corporate tax. It would eliminate all the various taxes that are hidden in our system, and Americans don’t realize what they are paying.”

- GOP Candidate Mike Huckabee at the May 16th Debate

Our income tax code is riddled
with exceptions and incentives that the 30,000 lobbyists in Washington have secured and continue to
secure for their clients. Little wonder
the code is incomprehensible and has a compliance cost to the private sector of
$270 billion a year…

I subscribe to a sales tax
system, most of which is included in what is called the Fair Tax. The Fair Tax meets
the fairness criteria: simplicity, transparency and no exceptions.

- DNC Candidate Mike Gravel on his web site

Tom Tancredo also supports (and co-sponsors) the FairTax.
