H.R. 25 (The FairTax) reaches 60 co-sponsors
This is a milestone for the FairTax - it has now reached 60 co-sponsors in the House of Representatives. This is a high-water mark for this bill in terms of number of co-sponsors. But more importantly, it shows that the grassroot movement in support of the FairTax plan is getting Washington’s attention. The only other serious tax reform legislation currently in the House is the Flat Tax with 4 sponsors.
Momentum is gaining on both sides of the aisle for the FairTax as members of Congress realize the need for this tax reform. Even Democratic Presidential Candidate Mike Gravel is making it part of his campaign platform.
If you have never heard of the FairTax, you need to read the book by Congressman John Linder (original sponsor of the bill) and talk radio host Neal Boortz. Get The FairTax Book and read it cover to cover before you pass judgement. I have found that most of the naysayers make their case on a single point at the exclusion of any details that might weaken their argument. This would indicate that they either have not actually read the entire book, or that their intentions are less than straightforward. Either way, you owe it to yourself to make an informed decision. (Consequently, Linder and Boortz are working on a second book tentatively entitled The FairTax, Answering the Critics.)
Here is Congressman John Linder’s announcement:
Washington, D.C. - Congressman John Linder (GA-07) announced today that his revolutionary tax reform legislation, the FairTax, achieved 60 co-sponsors, which is a record number for H.R. 25.
“I am ecstatic, but I have to say, I am not terribly surprised. This has been the case all year. Grassroots support across the nation is motivating Members to call us up and ask for information on the FairTax, and when they read it they are always eager to put their name on the bill.â€
Congressman Linder pointed out that the FairTax is the most highly co-sponsored piece of tax reform legislation in U.S. House of Representatives. In fact, the Flat Tax, which is the only other serious piece of tax reform legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives, falls far short of that number with only four.
“Again, I am just not surprised. In fact, this past Saturday I traveled to Macon, Georgia, to speak to another FairTax training session. They had around 50 people come out for several hours, on a Saturday, to learn how they can better educate others on the FairTax. That is real passion, and it is real traction, and I think that is what you see reflected in this incredible list of co-sponsors.â€
Congressman Linder also expressed his appreciation to Representatives Darrell Issa (CA-49) and John Boozman (AR-03) for being the most recent cosponsors of H.R. 25, and for surpassing the bill’s highest number of co-sponsors in merely the first four months of the 110th Congress.
