More lessons in accountability
Contrary to what Paris Hilton’s attorney believes, her 45 day sentence for driving on a suspended license was fair. Hilton’s defense amounted to a lack of understanding and, had she known, she wouldn’t have been driving. Hasn’t she ever heard the expression, “Ignorance of the law is no excuse”?
This is another example of the lack of personal accountability in America. If Paris Hilton actually had any respect for the law, she would not have been driving on a suspended license. Instead of taking personal accountability for her actions, she points blame at faulty information given to her by her advisers, most notably her publicist. She showed a complete lack of respect for the court by showing up late to the hearing. Actions speak louder than words, and this action sends a message of what she and her entourage think of the law.
Hilton’s attorney Howard Weitzman claims his client has “special needs.” Weitzman states that she is being singled out because of who she is, claiming this case should never have been brought by the city:
Speaking outside court, Weitzman expressed shock and disappointment at the judge’s decision, which he said “bordered on ludicrous.”
“It’s clear she was selectively prosecuted because of who she is,” Weitzman said. “Shame on the system and shame on the city attorney for bringing this case.”

It seems that in Weitzman’s world there should be two sets of laws - one for people like the Hiltons and one for the rest of the great unwashed masses. But far worse than Weitzman’s absurd statement is Hilton’s mother. She reportedly laughed at the city attorney’s closing arguments and asked the judge for his autograph after he passed sentence.
The bottom line is that Hilton is being treated like the rest of us. The judge should be applauded. Paris Hilton’s lack of personal accountability is being enabled by both her mother and her attorney. Unfortunately, she will have to learn this lesson the hard way by actually spending time in jail.
