Dean & Co. Look To November
Just because you repeat something over and over doesn’t make it true.
Howard Dean recently accused Republican of being weak on defense. [ Democratic chairman speaks at conference ] The problem is, his bullet points don’t hold any water with me.
First, he points out Osama bin Laden is still at large. That is true. However, many other key terror figures have been captured or have gone on to their 72 virgins (or grapes, depending on your translation). When Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed in Iraq, the Democrats (including Dean) were quick to point out, this is only one man - what are you doing to bring down al-Qaeda? But when that “just one man” mantra doesn’t fit the moment, it becomes “how come you haven’t captured Bin Laden?” Strike one for Howard in the defense credebility test.
His next point? Iran is about to get nuclear weapons. Well, Howard, I’d like to hear your solution to that one. I have heard this administration use some tough rhetoric. I’d like to see them be able to back it up. Unfortunately, when the Republican administration wants to turn up the heat on Iraq, they get push back from Howard & Co. If they don’t turn up the heat, those same Democrats say they aren’t handling the situation. Again, I’m open to listening to a better plan if you’ve got one. << sound of crickets chirping >>
Lastly, Howard has been kind enough to lob me a pitch that even I could knock out of the park - “North Korea’s quadrupled their nuclear weapons stash…” (Could it be any easier?) Now, I am well aware that Howard Dean isn’t directly responsible for Kim Jong Il having the materials to make a nuke. The problem is, he’d like you to forget that it was a Democratic administration that gave it to him. More specifically, it was a Democratic president, a former Democratic president, and a Democratic Secretary of State. That’s not a good track record. Jimmy Carter and Madeleine Albright are directly responsible for today’s North Korean situation. (Now, I know that Democrats will say that North Korea kept to the original agreement until George Bush broke it. Unfortunately, that’s a Americocentric version of how the North Koreans believe the Korean conflict began when the United States invaded Korea.) The fact is Kim Jong Il had a plan all along. He just shifted the timeframe. He is a magician - a master of misdirection and he used Carter’s concessions to keep from going broke. In exchange, he merely delayed the nuclear warhead portion of his plan and instead focused on advancing his delivery mechanism. After their 1998 missile launch, the truth was evident - a nuclear armed North Korea was inevitable. Kim Jong Il had no intention of ever keeping the Carter agreement and he flaunted that fact while he danced with Madeleine Albright in 2000.
Back to the bigger point of this post - Dean’s entire approach is to say the Republicans either have no plan or have an inept plan, while all the while he has no plan of his own to offer. It continues to be the same tired diatribe we had to endure during the 2004 election cycle - “They (the GOP) are leading us down the wrong path, their policies are bad, ’stay the course’ is not a plan.” But that’s where it ends. When confronted on their plan, it becomes quite evident that they have none. Their answer is always, “Oh, we have a plan. We intend to unveil our plan X days from now.” But if they ever do, it usually is either the exact opposite of the current administration’s plan (which doesn’t necessarily make it better) - or, more often, it is a rehash of exactly the exsisting course of action, but mixed with more rhetoric.
The rest of Dean’s agenda reads like a copy of the Communist Manifesto. The scary thing to me is that the entire party has been hijacked by the extreme left - Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, John Kerry, John Murtha… the list goes on. These extremists have clearly put party before country in their desire to regain power. And it is clear they will stop at nothing to get it. They say they want a better America - a stronger America, but their proposed policies would provide exactly the opposite.
Meanwhile, the GOP can’t seem to work together and are bumbling all over themselves. Sometimes the lesser of two evils is the obvious choice. Unfortunately, this November it may not be. Where is Newt when you need him?
