Lose/Lose
Evidently, Mr. Kevin Barrett, Islamic studies lecturer at UW Madison believes there is a government coverup of the facts behind 9/11. He recently wrote a letter to Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle regarding this. Doyle has asked to University to determine whether Barrett is unfit to teach. Steve Nass, state representative from Whitewater, has called for Barrett’s firing.
Do nothing or let him stay and they encounter the wrath of those that think there is no place for conspiracy theory in higher education. Fire him and you label yourself an enemy of academic freedom and freedom of speech (never mind the fact that freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequence - that’s a dissertation for another time).
I will hand it to Barrett. He is cunning and has put his adversaries in an unwinnable situation. It will be interesting to see how this plays out, but right now it looks like check and mate.
