A Lesson in Jr. High Civics
I am disappointed in our Congress. They appearently need a refresher course in government and civics.
In a joint statement from Dennis Hastert and Nancy Pelosi, they had this to say:
Excuse me a second, but there is a reason we have a triune government - so that two branches of government can check the third. The Justice Departement (Executive Branch) received a warrant (from the Judicial Branch) to investigate wrongdoing by a member of the Legistative Branch. If that is not a working example of checks and balances, I don’t know what is.
Every member of Congress cries bloody murder when they think the Executive Branch is getting away with something and needs to be checked. Since the 1970s, Congress has issued thousands of subpeonas to the Executive. Now that the tables are turned, they don’t seem to like it so much.
This is not “abuse of power” but rather an attempt to get to the bottom of a river of dirty money that is flowing into the Capital. The stench is unbearable. It is about time the Justice Department sends a message that members of Congress are subject to the same Constitution as the rest of us.
Do you think these folks would be in such an uproar if they had nothing to hide?
