Our “Friend” to the South
In the Presidential Address this week, President Bush made reference to our “friend” to the south, Mexico. Now, I liked a lot of what was proposed. Certainly there are issues in his plan that could be picked apart, and others that maybe should be. But on the whole, it was a huge step in the right direction.
But the whole “friend” thing… well, that’s a problem. The Mexican government has continued to support the illegal immigration that has been going on. Why?‚ Pure economics. The illegals send billions of US dollars back to Mexico to support their families that stayed. That is money spent in the Mexican economy and not here. As a result, the government of Mexico has not had to focus on internal government corruption that has led their economy on the downward spiral that encourages this mass exodus.
You would think the government would be embarrassed that a large percentage of their population wants to leave - and leave for a better life. What does that say to Vincente Fox about the job he is doing?
Now that the US has decided to actually do something about this ongoing problem, the response from both the US and Mexico will be interesting. Already Mexico is threatening lawsuits if the National Guard detains migrants (their word… mine is illegal immigrants). No suprise there. They need this to keep on going so they don’t have to do anything to fix their problems at home. The suprise is that I haven’t heard a single US governmental official decry this as an outrage.
Mexico is threating lawsuits against our sovreignty - our right to potrol and protect our own borders, our right to detain and deport those that violate our immigration laws. This is unheard of. And our elected officials that are supposed to represent us remain silent. Mexico deals pretty violently protecting its southern border with Guatemala. Maybe Guatemala should sue them.
