The Kennedy Standard
If you have been following the Alito confirmation hearings, you are well aware that the Honorable Senator from Chappaquiddick has been badgering Alito over his affiliation with a Princeton University alumni club, saying his “affiliation with an organization that fought the admission of women into Princeton calls into question his appreciation for the need for full equality in this country.”
Interestingly, Teddy Chappaquiddick was a member of The Owl Club, an alumni club from Harvard that refused to admit women. In fact, they were banned from Harvard’s campus in 1984. Now, you would think that this fact alone would have woken Kennedy up to the implications of association with such a group. However, that did not seem to matter to Kennedy until yesterday when he chose to disassociate himself with the Owls.
“He has decided to be taken off their rolls, believing that it is a mistake to continue to be affiliated,” Kennedy spokeswoman Melissa Wagoner said in a statement.
Well, I should say it is a mistake! Now, as far as I know, Alito did not continue his membership with the Princeton group. If he had, I am certain we would have heard about it. He said that it was something from his past that he did not even recall. This is quite unlike Kennedy who was actually still paying dues to the Owls.
It just reiterates what I have said before about the Kennedy double standard. But in this case, if you hold Kennedy to the Kennedy standard, Kennedy isn’t fit for public office. Too bad he’s running for re-election which we all know is a rubber stamp in Massachusetts.
