CBC Foundation = Scrooge

Some of the politicians I loathe the most are members of the Congressional Black Caucus, so when anything attached to them invites bad press, I must share it. These are some of the most vocal members of congress, and at the same time, some of the most useless.

An offshoot of the CBC is the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, and they established the CBCF Katrina Relief Fund to address their (very vocal) dissatisfaction with the the response to Katrina relief from the federal government. Consider the following statements following Katrina:

We have witnessed something shockingly awful and that is the lack of response, the quick response, from our government to those Americans who are suffering [and] who are dying.”

-U.S. Rep Jesse Jackson Jr., (D-Ill.)

“I’m ashamed of our government. We don’t want another Iraq, where the money just goes off somewhere. This is real human need. And I’m outraged by the lack of response from our federal government.”

-U.S. Rep. Carolyn C. Kilpatrick (D-Mich.)

So the CBCF established its own relief fund in response. And declared it an immediate success, claiming that $700,000 in pledges (toward their goal of $1 Million) had been received. Yet, in reality, they have raised somewhere in the neighborhood of $350,000 according to this update on their web site.

Relentless in their criticism of George Bush, they complained about the timeliness of response to Katrina victims, playing the ever popular race card. So it is interesting to find out that they have yet to distribute a single penny of the money they have raised.

In that case, it is a darn good thing that Katrina victims are not relying on help from the CBC.
