Praying for Dungy
It would be awful to receive news that one of your sons committed suicide.
It would be worse to get that news just days before Christmas.
I personally felt sympathetic pain for Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy when hearing that one of his sons had committed suicide. I have had a tremendous amount of respect for Dungy as an NFL head coach. I truly believe that without the groundwork that Dungy had laid, Jon Gruden would never have been able to get the Tampa Bay Bucs to the Super Bowl, let alone win it.
I have been rooting for the Colts most of this season (and I’m not even a Colts fan), one because they had a chance at a perfect season, but mostly, because it looks as though they have a shot at the Super Bowl victory. That, in my book, would be great vindication for Tony Dungy. Tampa Bay should never have fired him when they did, and had he stayed, the ring would have been Dungy’s and not Gruden’s.
And to compare the on-field demeanor of Gruden vs Dungy, well, it is no comparison. Dungy is a class act and takes us back to an era that has long since been forgotten. Remember the way coaches like Tom Landry presented themselves on the field? Dungy is that kind of coach and that kind of man. He commands respect by his actions, not his words.
I would love to see him bring the Lombardi Trophy to Indianapolis. Even before this tragedy, no single other coach in the NFL today deserves it more. But tomorrow we will be watching what I believe is a preview of Super Bowl XL and the Colts will take the field without their head coach.
I pray that Dungy can find strength in the coming days and that God will ease his pain.
