Constitutional Quiz
OK. Here’s one for all you Constitutionality Watchers (and these days, who’s not? What with the nomination of 2 new justices and all, it’s hard to not get dragged into the game.)
Newark, New Jersey is paying a newspaper $100,000 to only publish good news about the city. Violation of the 1st Amendment - Freedom of the Press?
Times up.
If you answered “no” go to the head of the class.
Now, if the question was “Is this a good use of taxpayers’ money?” or “Is it really wise policy for the paper to accept this compromise?” then we would have to answer differently. But here we have a private company accepting funds for what basically amounts to advertising for the city of Newark.
Call it spin or propaganda if you will, but no one is forcing them to take the money. In fact, the paper is the one who talked the city council into this deal.
Things must be pretty bad in Newark if they have to go out and buy good press.
